The elegant and stately Kanker Palace, built in 1937 as the residence of the British Agent and at present lived in by the Royal family, now receives and hosts visitors. With its age-old and deep ties with this region, and a heritage site itself, it endeavors to open a humane and sensitive window into the life and culture of this region to the genuinely interested and understanding visitor.
Its castle-like facade, spacious rooms, high ceiling, dainty windows and ventilators, quaint draw-fans, and outhouse and the garden in which it is set, will transport You to a bygone era. Its suites combine traditional elegance with modern facilities you could spend some time with the Royal family sharing their understanding of the region, its culture and history.

Behind the Palace are a paddy farm, vegetable garden and mango orchard . Naturally grown and freshly plucked fruits and vegetables  from here are prepared with local flavors and in traditional style in the Palace Kitchen for the visitors. Kanker Palace offers a homely hospitality you will cherish forever

Exclusive

Sometimes, on a long and tiring tour, one feels like taking a day off and just letting go. Kanker Palace now offers one of its farmhouses as a hideaway just so that you could relax. 30 Kms into the countryside at Girhola, where a farmhouse is set amidst lawns and is surrounded by paddy fields, you get to unwind in rural idyll.

Here you could visit friendly villagers and look into the eyes of cows and buffaloes, or read, write, paint or cast a line in the pond. You could also see the sun set beyond the hills at a distance and hear a lone hyena call out into the dark, as you enjoy a barbecue dinner!

A short drive from Girhola are the serene and secluded backwaters of the Gangrel reservoir on the Mahanadi. Canoe – like  boats will glide you into a landscape where small, grassy islands play hide and seek within a placid expanse of water, a place that, not surprisingly, has become a haven for both local and migratory birds like the Cotton teal, the Brahmi duck and the Open-billed stork.

After your time at Girhola you will come back refreshed for the rest of the tour and a memory that will make you smile.

Kitchen

Kanker Palace has built up a rich tradition of gastronomical sares that combines local cuisine with input from the other royal houses from where princesses have married into the Kanker family. At present your host Jolly is an avid cook and has added substantially to the repertoire. Vegetables freshly picked from the palace farm behind, are used in the kitchen, on request Jolly can give you hands on experience in the palace kitchen.
